Halloween Costumes

We're into recycling in the BAD Household so we, again, recycled our Halloween costumes. n x 1.6 km (for n>1) usually is the one with new costumes since he's the oldest.

This year, he was a Lepidopterologist (a.k.a. butterfly scientist).

Last year at school, n x 1.6 km (for n>1)'s class had a caterpillar/butterfly nursery where they watched 8 caterpillars make their transformation into butterflies. Since then, he's been super interested in caterpillars and butterflies, so we thought this costume would be great! His favorite butterfly is the Monarch.

CED had the choice between two different costumes. He could have been an airplane, like this cute kid here.

 

Or he could choose to be a train engineer. I thought he'd go with the airplane since he loves them more than trains but he has Mad Scientist's claustrophobic tendencies (they don't like bandaids on their skin, etc.) so didn't want to wear the airplane after I bought if for him off Craigslist. So, CED was a train engineer like his brother before him. He could have had a brand "new" costume that no one else in the family had worn before, but alas, it was not to be.

 And as for Trogdor..... he, of course, was our very own "Got Milk?" Cow. His brothers were "Got Milk?" Cows too. Let's see if you can spot which one is Trogdor. (Bonus if you can also identify which is n x 1.6 km (for n>1) and CED.)

Election Day

n x 1.6 km (for n>1) voted for Mitt today.

Yup.

You might be scratching your head and asking how an 8 year old kid can vote. No. They didn't ease voting restrictions in our state. n x 1.6 km (for n>1)'s school is having a School Vote on Election day today. (n x 1.6 km (for n>1) just came home and said they didn't have their results in yet. I'll keep you posted.) In preparation for the School Vote, they handed out two summaries of the candidates' backgrounds and some of their views. n x 1.6 km (for n>1) told us yesterday that there was a School Vote today. I asked him who he was going to vote for and he told me Mitt Romney.

So, a couple weeks ago, n x 1.6 km (for n>1) had said some kids at school asked who he liked better and he said Obama, so it threw me a bit when he told me yesterday he was going to vote for Mitt. I asked him what prompted his decision. He had done some thinking about it and I thought I'd share some of his reasoning.

First, n x 1.6 km (for n>1) explained that Mill was a member of our church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (aka, a Mormon) so that was good. I told him that many people in our church are probably voting for him just because he's Mormon, but that shouldn't be the sole reason to vote for someone. (In fact, our church comes out every election season telling everyone to vote, but that they do NOT endorse any particular party or candidate.) So, we asked him some other reasons why he was going to vote for Mitt. The next reason he came up with was he married a Davies (Ann Davies). We chuckled a bit at this reason.

We asked if there were some other reasons for his choice and he figured we were getting serious on our questions so he dug out his Mitt Romney pamphlet for more backup. Then he mentioned Mitt's work on rescuing the 2002 Winter Olympics and we all agreed that was a good thing going for him. Then, n x 1.6 km (for n>1) brought up another reason without our further prompting that was quite ironic. He brought up that as governor of Massachusetts, Mitt set up and provided health care to nearly all the people in his state. We were amused at that since Romney has backed away from his program to please his party base. Both Mad Scientist and I told n x 1.6 km (for n>1) that Romney's health care program in Massachusetts was something we really liked about him, but that he no longer really supports it.

Yesterday, I was having lunch with a friend and she told me about this house close to her's that is a house divided. One day, the husband put out a Romney sign out on the lawn. A few days later, the wife put out an Obama sign also on their lawn. Then, out went another Romney sign, followed by another Obama sign. Thus it continued until their lawn had 4 Romney signs on one side if their lawn and 4 Obama signs on the other side of the lawn! Talk about a house divided!

So, our house is a bit divided too, but not quite in the same way.   Mad Scientist and I have already voted since Why-Oh-Uh offers early voting. My brother and sister-in-law recently visited for Trogdor's baby blessing and asked if we had lots of friends who were more liberal. We answered that we're most people's liberal friends. :) Anyway. We're both supporters of Obama and voted accordingly.


Anyway. We basically wrapped up the talk with n x 1.6 km (for n>1) telling him it is important to research where a candidate stands on issues and not vote for him just because he's Mormon too.

I guess the take home message is GO VOTE and do your research!
