Blank Park Zoo

Before school started (yes, I'm a bit behind on my blogging), we were able to use some free passes acquired from the Library Summer Reading program to Blank Park Zoo, in Des Moines. It is a small zoo and I don't think we'd repeat the visit since the drive is a bit long, but the boys had fun looking at the animals.
Geckos are just such fun animals.
Tamarin monkey
Victoria Crowned Pigeon
Macaw - this guy was so sad looking in his cage. He showed obvious signs of stress.
Not sure what this creature is.
Of course, my boys had to ride the zoo train.
These tortoises looked like they were giving each other a kiss.
Is this where babies come from??
Triplets???

Girls' Weekend to Madison

Recently, I was able to take a much needed Girls' weekend trip to Madison, WI. There was a Time Out for Women Conference there. Usually, I'm not really into that sort of thing, but I really wanted to go hang out with friends and get away for a bit.  Since I had such low expectations for the Conference, I was actually surprised and got some spiritual recharge from it, so that's a good thing. We got in some good eats, excellent chatting, hot tubbing, Truth and Dare and very little sleep. So fun.

After the conference, we were able to walk around Madison a bit. The Saturday of the conference was the same day as a home football game, so downtown was hopping.

Capitol Building
Statues on the Capitol
This was a thrilling picture for our household since we love bikes! And they are red!! So Awesome!
Detail of lamppost at the Capitol building.

There happened to also be an Ironman event in Madison the next day and here are all the bikes ready to go. FYI - the Iron Man Triathalon is a 2.4 mile swim, a 112 mile bike ride and a marathon (26.22 miles).

A sculpture in the sculpture garden by Lake Manona
Sail boats on Lake Mendota
There wasn't any railings on this walkway on the way to the Student Union Building which made us wonder how many drunk students wandered into the water after games.
Morgridge Center for Public Service building - I love the castle look.

Buildings with turrets are so cool.
Looking out at Lake Mendota from the Union building.
This seagull was just chillin' like a villain.
I got a pic of a Trolley Pub in Madison. Basically, it was a trolley with tiny bar stools and counters with cup holders. The people sit on the stools and there is a bike pedaling crank at their feet. The trolley is powered by the patrons pedaling. They have a cooler full of alcohol and you drink and pedal yourself around the downtown area. It was quite hilarious to watch.

Other Cool Hawaii Pics

Sorry folks. I haven't had a chance to post other cool pics that I took in Hawaii. Here they are:

Quintessential Hawaii postcard pic - on the way to Fern Grotto on the Smith's Family Boat tour.
Fern Grotto - only accessible by boat or kayak.
Random peacock roaming the Smith's Family Botanical gardens.
Mad Scientist ready to do the luau!
These Hong Kong Orchid Trees were all over Hong Kong. They had some on Kauai which was a good trip down memory lane for me.
Yet another postcard picture. I love the red Japanese bridge in this one.
Cool rocks along the Mahaulepu Heritage Coastal Trail
There were all these stacks of stones on the beach along the Mahaulepu Heritage Trail.

This one was built by our boys.
